I recently went on a five day mountain climb with a friend. We prepared thoroughly before leaving just as one should prepare thoroughly before starting a business. Once we got started with the climb it soon became apparent why this had been important. The more we climbed, the more I realized how similar hiking up a mountain and running a business are. Here's what I leaed:
The first day was challenging but exhilarating. I was pleased we had packed in warmer clothes as that night the temperature dropped suddenly. It was good to know we had what we needed to stay warm.
Even though I had wo my new foldable trekking pole for sale in, I already had the makings of a blister after one day's walking. Worst of all I had forgotten to pack in any sticking plaster. Thank goodness my mate had not forgotten and so I was able to use some of his.
As we made our way up the side of the mountain on Day 2, we discovered that the route we had wanted to take was closed due to expected heavy rain. This had not been forecast before leaving. Although this was disappointing, we had the required maps and information about alteative paths, so all that was needed was for us to re evaluate and change our plan before moving on.
One can't be prepared for everything that may crop up in your business either but if you have the tools like a business plan and some alteative ideas, all you need to do is change the plan and keep going.
Unfortunately the rain did not let up for the whole of the next day. Although we had all the wet gear required and had spoken about the possibility of rain beforehand, I had not quite prepared myself mentally for this happening. At various stages throughout the day as the rain beat into my face and I had almost lost my footing a few times I felt like giving up.
